Local Enterprise Partnership

Businesses are at the heart of possible changes to how strategic economic decisions may be made in the future. Major employers (across North Hampshire and the surrounding areas) are pledging their support to working with councils in and around north Hampshire to bid to become a Local Enterprise Partnership. LEP is a strategic economic partnership between businesses and local authorities.

This is a proposal that has been put forward, by the government, as a possible replacement for regional development agencies, which in the South East is South East England Development Agency (SEEDA). Based on a 'functional economic area', which refers to the real local economy rather than using administrative boundaries, this partnership would direct investment, infrastructure improvements and business support at a local level.

Based on business supply chains, travel to work areas and leisure patterns, the 'functional economic area' for Basingstoke is made up of the areas broadly covered by Test Valley, Basingstoke and Deane, Hart, Rushmoor and Surrey Heath Councils. The local authorities across these areas have been working together for over a year now and have formed the North Hampshire and M3 Corridor Economic Board.

There are also good links with neighbouring areas in the Thames Valley through the Diamonds and Investment for Growth. The board works together to encourage inward investment and improve infrastructure and skills across the sub-region. It would provide a perfect base on which to form the LEP. Many businesses across the area have come forward to support this approach. Now a proposal is being drafted to submit to the Government by the early September deadline.
